![]() Games Like Red Dead Redemption How To Ride ABonnie and the other people you meet look and sound good, especially in cut scenes, and they've got a lot to say in my hours and hours of testing, I never heard the same line twice.Red Dead Redemption follows Rockstar's usual open-world sandbox formula. In exchange for the assistance, you help Bonnie around the farm, which serves as a tutorial level that teaches you to how to ride a horse, how to break a horse, and other cowboy essentials. He recovers with the help of Bonnie McFarlane, a lovely rancher who takes the wounded cowboy to a physician. When Marston comes up against Williamson within the first few minutes of the game, he's shot down and left for dead. He's out for revenge against Bill Williamson, a former partner turned enemy. As the title implies, in Red Dead Redemption, you're an ex-criminal trying to atone for your past. In the GTA storyline, you're pretty much a criminal doing criminal things. But there's a different of emphasis in Red Dead Redemption that might make it less objectionable than GTA to parents. Some people may ask you to steal a cart others may ask you to help find an item or person. There's also a meter that tracks how "Honorable" or "Dishonorable" a man you are, which determines how people react to you and what kind of side-quests open up. Here you can heighten your "Fame," which allows you operate above the law as you become more famous. In between the main story missions there are opportunities to help strangers. But these options are nothing compared to the detail taken in creating the overall gameplay experience. While the internal combustion engine was catching on east of the Mississippi in the early 1900s, the main mode of transport for westerners was still the noble steed, and in Red Dead Redemption, horses are rendered with the lavish care. You can skin any animal (and sell what you've hunted), hogtie people, wrangle horses, and so on. These parts of Red Dead add depth to John Marston's true character and another dimension to the western frontier.Nearly anything is possible here—this is the wild west—and Rockstar has left nothing out in recreating the frontier feel. What sets this game apart from GTA IV is its "Dead Eye" system, which lets players can slow down time to target and shoot enemies. You can also choose your weapon by manufacturer—specialty items sport such famous names as Springfield.GTA IV's white-dot targeting system is carried over, as well as the ability to target certain body parts to impair opponents. Each general class of weapon also has its own sub-classes that you can purchase, like automatic pistols or sawed-off shotguns (you can't saw off the barrel of your own shotgun—have to pay for a pre-sawed one). If you're a casual GTA player, you'll be happy to hear that riding rustled horses is much easier than learning to drive boosted cars. You get a wide array of weapons to choose from (each with its own power, range, speed, and ammo), including pistols, shotguns, rifles, pistols, repeaters, and the occasional specialty weapon (such as a Gatling gun) for rare moments when heavy firepower is needed. There's so much detail and intelligence in the horses you'll notice especially when they react to switching to roads after riding cross-country. Wavelab 7 downloadStill, most of the time Dead Eye mode is very handy, especially when you're trying to take down multiple enemies. Also, the sepia-tone filter that comes over the screen when you enter Dead Eye occasionally makes it difficult to distinguish between tumbleweed and human being. You may try to enter the mode in a battle only to find you have nothing left in the tank. For instance, in the cold mountains you may have to climb your way to a destination as well as fight a bear or mountain lion. While it's hard to compare graphics in GTA's urban environment to the Red Dead countryside, there's much more varied terrain in the latter, so it's more interesting to look at.Each environment has its own challenges and its own particular inhabitants. There are day and night transitions as well as cloudy, rainy, and sunny weather conditions—a nice touch. Environments range from snow-covered mountains, rising plateaus, wetlands, vast deserts, forests, and plains. Occasionally you'll curse the vast distances you have to cover to ride from one end of the country to the other, but there are plenty of spectacular sights to take in as you make your journeys. During a sequence where I had to stop a train from going off a cliff, I saw a piece of cargo floating in the air. Sometimes it's faster to simply cut across country—so long as you're watch out for cliffs and other hazards. My only gripe with Red Dead Redemption is the glitches. It can be helpful when you're looking for the right trails to get from one place to another. In another instance I met someone who merely existed within my (Marston's) mind.As vast as the world is, Rockstar knows that no one wants to have to keep pressing start to bring up their world map to assure themselves they're going in the right direction, so they've kept the GTA GPS map in Red Dead. With an immersive environment, wonderfully written characters, and a story that could only be told in the wild west, Red Dead Redemption is worth your $60. Given how long the game has been in development, that's disappointing.Read Dead Redemption could have used a little more time to sweep up the remaining kinks, but I'm glad it's finally available. I understand that these are small moments that will make players scratch their head and move on to the next big task, but they definitely took me out of the fantasy. There was even a case where I had to kill my character so I could restart the mission, because a character I was supposed to be following wasn't responding.
